Essential Apps for Denmark
Denmark runs on apps. Payments, government services, transport, healthcare — there’s an app for each, and most Danes use them daily. Install these in your first week.
Payment apps
MobilePay
The essential app. Used by ~90% of the population. Pay in shops (QR codes), send money to friends (by phone number), split bills, and pay invoices. Requires a Danish bank account, Danish phone number, and MitID. Install this the day you open your bank account.
Government apps
MitID
Denmark’s digital ID app. Required for logging into all government services, banking, and signing documents. Set up during your MitID registration.
e-Boks
Your mandatory digital mailbox. Official letters from SKAT, your kommune, healthcare, and employers arrive here. Check it weekly. See the e-Boks guide.
borger.dk app
Access citizen services on the go — address changes, NemKonto, digital post.
Transport apps
DOT Tickets / Rejseplanen
DOT (Din Offentlige Transport) for buying tickets in the Capital Region. Rejseplanen for planning journeys nationwide — covers buses, trains, metro, and ferries. Use together for seamless public transport.
DSB
National railway app. Buy train tickets, see live departures, and manage reservations. Useful for intercity travel (Copenhagen → Aarhus, Odense, etc.).
Rejsekort
The physical tap card for public transport, but the app lets you check balance and top up. See the public transport guide.
Health apps
Min Læge
Book GP appointments, renew prescriptions, send messages to your doctor, and view test results. Requires MitID. This replaces phone calls for most GP interactions.
Sundhed.dk
Access your full health records, vaccination history, and prescription overview. Also useful for finding and changing your GP.
Daily life apps
- GoMore — car-sharing and ride-sharing. Rent a car by the hour or share rides between cities.
- GreenMobility / ShareNow — electric car-sharing in Copenhagen (pick up / drop off anywhere).
- Too Good To Go — buy surplus food from restaurants and shops at huge discounts. Very popular in Denmark.
- Nemlig.com / Coop — online grocery delivery.
- Pant — Denmark’s bottle recycling system. Not an app per se, but learn the pant system — return bottles/cans at any supermarket for a refund.
Install in order: MitID first (needed for everything), then MobilePay (needed for daily payments), then e-Boks (needed for official mail), then transport and health apps as needed.
Questions and answers
Do I need a Danish phone for these apps?
MobilePay requires a Danish phone number. MitID works on any phone. Most other apps work with any number but benefit from a Danish number for SMS verification.
Are there English versions?
MitID, MobilePay, e-Boks, DOT, DSB, and Min Læge all have English versions or interfaces. Some smaller apps are Danish-only.
