Confused about all the numbers? Here’s what each means in Denmark, how to get them, and when you need them as a resident, worker, or business.

🔢
Fast Fact: Most individuals only need a CPR number (your personal ID). Businesses need a CVR/VAT number. You’ll get a tax number automatically when you register.

Overview: Which Number Do You Need?

CPR Number (Tax ID) Your unique personal number as a resident in Denmark—used for all tax, health, and public services.
Tax Number Assigned by SKAT (the tax office) when you register for work or business. Used for all tax filings.
VAT/CVR Number Required for businesses that sell goods/services and charge VAT (“moms”). A CVR number is your official business ID.

Tax ID: CPR Number

What is a CPR Number? The “Central Person Register” number (CPR) is your main ID for all life in Denmark (format: DDMMYY-XXXX).

Tax Number (Skattepersonnummer)

What Is It? For most individuals, it’s your CPR. Non-residents working short-term get a separate “tax number” (not CPR).
Short-Term Workers Apply at SKAT for a tax number if you’ll work/study less than 3 months and don’t get a CPR. skat.dk
How to Find It? It’s on your tax card, in your e-Boks, or your online SKAT profile. Ask your employer if unsure.

VAT Number / CVR (“Momsnummer”)

Who Needs a VAT/CVR? All companies, freelancers, and sole proprietors making over 50,000 DKK/year from sales/services. Register with the Danish Business Authority.
How to Get It Apply online at virk.dk. You’ll get a CVR (business registration) and, if relevant, a VAT number.
How to Use It Put your CVR/VAT number on invoices and receipts. Needed for all official business and cross-border transactions.
