MitID & NemID in Denmark — What to Know & How to Set Up
MitID is Denmark’s digital ID for banking and public services. Here’s how it differs from NemID, how to set it up, recovery options, and how to fix common errors.
Overview
🔐 What is MitID?
Denmark’s digital ID replacing NemID. Used for banking, taxes, healthcare and official messages (e-Boks/Mit.dk).
🆔 Who can get it?
Residents with CPR and valid photo ID. Some non-EU passports work; otherwise expect an in-person ID check.
🏦 Where to activate?
Via your bank, online pre-approval + video/branch, or at Citizen Service (Borgerservice) with documents.
Setup — step by step
📝 1) Prerequisites
CPR number, phone, email, and valid photo ID (passport/ID card). Bring residence permit if applicable.
📲 2) Choose a path
Most users: start in your bank’s app or website. Alternatively book Borgerservice for in-person verification.
🔑 3) Create user ID
Pick a MitID user ID, set PIN and install the MitID app (or request a code display if needed).
✅ 4) Activate & test
Confirm activation codes, then test login on borger.dk or your bank.

Frequently asked questions
❓ Do I still need NemID?
No. NemID has been replaced for most users. Use MitID for all logins going forward.
🌍 Can I use a foreign passport?
Often yes, but some passports require in-person verification. Bring residence card and proof of address.
💡 No smartphone?
Ask for the MitID code display (hardware token) and keep it as your main or backup method.
🧳 Travelling soon?
Set up a backup method before you go. Losing access abroad is fixable but slower.
🏦 Bank vs Borgerservice?
