Permanent Residency in Denmark
After living in Denmark on a valid permit for a qualifying period, you can apply for permanent residency (tidsubegrænset opholdstilladelse). This removes employer-tied restrictions and gives you the right to live and work in Denmark indefinitely — regardless of job changes, unemployment, or changes in circumstances.
What is permanent residency?
Permanent residency means you can live and work in Denmark without time limits or employer restrictions. Unlike a work permit, it doesn’t expire and isn’t tied to a specific job. It’s a stepping stone to Danish citizenship.
Basic conditions (you must meet all)
- Continuous legal residence in Denmark for the qualifying period
- No serious criminal convictions
- No outstanding public debt (tax, social benefits repayment, etc.)
- Not received certain public benefits in the 3 years before application
- Valid residence permit at the time of application
- Sign a declaration on integration and active citizenship
Supplementary conditions
In addition to the basic conditions, you must meet at least 2 of 4 supplementary conditions to qualify at the standard 8-year mark (or all 4 for the fast-track 4-year mark):
- Employment: Full-time employment for at least 3.5 of the last 4 years
- Danish language: Passed Prøve i Dansk 2 or higher (Danish language test)
- Active citizenship: Voluntary work, community involvement, or similar
- Income: Average annual income above a threshold for the last 2 years
Qualifying period
- 8 years — standard track. Must meet basic conditions + 2 of 4 supplementary.
- 4 years — fast track. Must meet basic conditions + all 4 supplementary conditions.
How to apply
Apply at nyidanmark.dk with documentation proving you meet the conditions. Processing takes several months. An application fee applies.
What permanent residency gives you
- No employer-tied restrictions — work anywhere, change jobs freely
- No renewal required — your right to stay doesn’t expire
- Access to broader social benefits
- Eligibility to apply for Danish citizenship
Permanent residency can be revoked if you live outside Denmark for more than 12 consecutive months (or 6 months in some cases), commit serious crimes, or obtained it through fraud.
Common problems
I haven’t passed Prøve i Dansk 2
You need at least 2 of 4 supplementary conditions. If Danish language isn’t one, strengthen employment, income, and active citizenship instead.
I had a gap in employment
The employment condition looks at 3.5 of the last 4 years. Short gaps may be acceptable. Extended unemployment could be a problem — check with SIRI.
Questions and answers
Do I need to give up my original citizenship?
No. Permanent residency is not citizenship. You keep your original nationality. Denmark does allow dual citizenship if you later apply for citizenship.
Can my family get permanent residency too?
Each family member applies individually. They must meet the conditions independently (including the residence period from their own permit start date).
