How Prescriptions Work in Denmark
Your GP writes prescriptions digitally — they go straight into the system. Pick up your medication at any pharmacy using your CPR number. A subsidy system (tilskud) reduces your cost as your annual spending increases. Here’s exactly how it works.
Overview
Denmark’s prescription system is fully digital. Your GP writes a prescription that goes into a central database. You pick it up at any pharmacy (apotek) in Denmark — no paper slip needed. Just give your CPR number and the pharmacist retrieves your prescription.
How it works step by step
Your GP prescribes medication
During your appointment (or via e-consultation through Min Læge), your GP writes a digital prescription. It appears instantly in the national system.
Go to any pharmacy
Visit any apotek in Denmark. Give them your CPR number (or show your yellow health card).
Pharmacy dispenses medication
The pharmacist retrieves your prescription, prepares the medication, and applies any applicable tilskud (subsidy) automatically. You pay the remaining amount.
The tilskud (subsidy) system
Denmark subsidises prescription medication through a tiered system that tracks your annual spending. The more you spend in a year, the higher the subsidy becomes:
- First ~1,055 DKK/year: You pay 100% (no subsidy)
- 1,055 – 1,720 DKK: You pay 50%
- 1,720 – 3,130 DKK: You pay 25%
- 3,130 – ~4,270 DKK: You pay 15%
- Above ~4,270 DKK: The region covers 100% (you pay nothing)
Thresholds are approximate and adjusted annually. The subsidy year resets on a personal anniversary (not January 1). The pharmacy system tracks your spending automatically via your CPR — you don’t need to submit claims.
The subsidy only applies to approved medications listed in SKAT’s tilskudslisten. Not all medications are subsidised. Your GP can check whether a specific medication has tilskud before prescribing.
At the pharmacy
Danish pharmacies (apoteker) are professional, well-stocked, and pharmacists speak English (especially in cities). Key things to know:
- Opening hours: Most pharmacies open 9:00–17:30 weekdays, shorter on Saturdays. Duty pharmacies (vagtapotek) stay open late or 24 hours — check sundhed.dk for locations.
- Generic substitution: Pharmacists may offer a cheaper generic alternative to the prescribed brand. This is standard practice and usually saves money. You can decline if you prefer the specific brand.
- Dosage dispensing: For multiple medications, pharmacies can prepare pre-sorted daily doses (dosisdispensering). Useful for complex medication regimens.
Renewing prescriptions
Many prescriptions are written for a specific number of refills or a time period. To renew:
- Through Min Læge (app): Send your GP a renewal request. They approve it digitally — often within 1–2 business days, no appointment needed.
- Through sundhed.dk: View your active prescriptions and request renewals online.
- By phone: Call your GP’s clinic during phone hours.
- At the pharmacy: For some long-term medications, the pharmacist can issue a limited emergency refill and notify your GP.
Managing prescription costs
- Choose generic: Always accept the pharmacist’s generic alternative. Same active ingredient, lower price.
- Join Sygeforsikring “denmark”: This supplementary insurance provides additional subsidies on top of the public tilskud. Cost: ~150–250 DKK/quarter. Especially valuable if you have regular prescriptions.
- Kronikertilskud: If you have a chronic condition requiring continuous medication, you can apply for additional subsidies through your GP. This lowers the annual threshold at which higher subsidies kick in.
Over-the-counter medication
Basic painkillers (paracetamol/ibuprofen in small packs), antihistamines, throat lozenges, and similar are available without prescription. Small packs are sold in supermarkets and kiosks. Larger packs and stronger OTC medications (like nasal decongestants) are pharmacy-only.
Common problems
The pharmacy says my prescription has expired
Prescriptions have a validity period (typically 2 years for most medications). If expired, contact your GP for a renewal. For urgent medications, the pharmacist may issue an emergency supply.
My medication from abroad is not available in Denmark
The active ingredient may be sold under a different brand name. Your GP can prescribe the Danish equivalent. For truly unavailable medications, your GP can apply for special import permission through the Danish Medicines Agency.
I’m paying full price — when does the subsidy start?
You pay 100% until your annual spending exceeds ~1,055 DKK. After that, the subsidy kicks in automatically. If you have high prescription costs, the threshold is reached quickly and subsequent purchases are significantly cheaper.
Questions and answers
Can I get prescriptions from abroad filled in Denmark?
EU prescriptions can be filled in Denmark under cross-border healthcare rules. Non-EU prescriptions generally cannot — you need a Danish GP to write a new prescription.
Can I see my prescription history online?
Yes. Log in to sundhed.dk with MitID to see all active prescriptions, past medications, and your tilskud spending level.
Are contraceptives subsidised?
Some contraceptives have tilskud, especially for women under 25 (higher subsidy). Check with your GP or pharmacist for your specific option.
