How to Renew Your Residence Permit in Denmark
Your Danish residence permit has an expiry date. Renewing it requires applying well before it expires — ideally 2–3 months ahead. This guide covers the process for every permit type, what documents you need, and what happens if you leave it too late.
Overview
Most residence and work permits in Denmark are granted for 2–4 years and must be renewed before expiry. The renewal process is handled by SIRI (Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration) through nyidanmark.dk.
The critical rule: apply before your permit expires. If you apply on time, you can legally stay in Denmark while the renewal is processed — even if processing takes longer than your remaining permit validity. If you miss the deadline, you may have to leave the country.
Do not wait until the last week. Processing can take 1–3 months depending on permit type and SIRI’s workload. If you apply before expiry, your right to stay is maintained during processing. If you apply after expiry, it’s treated as a new application — and you may not be allowed to stay.

While you wait
If you applied before your permit expired, you have the right to remain in Denmark and continue working while SIRI processes your renewal. You’ll receive a letter confirming your processuelt ophold (right to stay during processing). Keep this with your passport when travelling.
Travel warning: Travelling outside Denmark during the processing period can be risky. If your permit has expired and you leave, you may need a new visa to re-enter. Consult SIRI before travelling internationally.
Biometrics appointment
SIRI may require new biometrics (photo and fingerprints) for your residence card. You’ll be notified if this is needed. Appointments are booked through nyidanmark.dk at SIRI’s offices in Copenhagen, Aarhus, or Odense. Book promptly — limited slots available.
If your circumstances changed
Changed employer
If you changed jobs, you need a new work permit — not a renewal. The new employer must meet all requirements for the scheme you’re on. Apply through nyidanmark.dk as a new application.
Got married or divorced
If your permit is based on family reunification and your relationship ended, your permit basis may no longer be valid. Contact SIRI immediately. You may be able to switch to a work permit if you’re employed.
Salary changed
If your salary dropped below the Pay Limit Scheme threshold, your renewal may be denied. Ensure your salary still qualifies before applying.
If your permit already expired
If you missed the deadline and your permit expired before you applied:
- You are technically staying illegally in Denmark. This can affect future applications.
- Apply immediately — SIRI may exercise discretion if the delay is short (days, not months).
- You may be asked to leave Denmark while the application is processed.
- In serious cases, a late application is treated as a completely new application with full processing times.
An expired permit can affect your CPR registration, tax status, health insurance, and right to work. If you realize your permit has expired, stop working and contact SIRI immediately. The consequences of working without a valid permit are severe — including a potential re-entry ban.
If your renewal is rejected
- You’ll receive a written decision with the reasons for rejection.
- You typically have 7 days to leave Denmark voluntarily (the departure deadline is stated in the letter).
- You can appeal to the Immigration Appeals Board (Udlændingenævnet) within the deadline stated. An appeal does not automatically suspend the departure requirement — you must also request suspensive effect.
- Common rejection reasons: salary below threshold, employer non-compliance, missing documents, changed circumstances.
Common problems
SIRI is asking for additional documents
Respond within the deadline they give you (usually 14 days). If you need more time, request an extension in writing. Missing the deadline can result in your application being decided on incomplete information — usually a rejection.
My employer won’t provide the confirmation letter
If your employer refuses or is slow, this is a red flag. The employer declaration is mandatory for work permit renewals. Escalate through HR. If the company is shutting down or laying you off, you may need to apply for a different permit type.
Processing is taking longer than expected
You can check your case status online at nyidanmark.dk. If processing exceeds the published average, you can contact SIRI by phone or email to request an update. There’s no way to expedite a standard application.
Questions and answers
Can I travel while my renewal is being processed?
Within the EU/Schengen area: generally yes, if your current permit/card is still physically valid. Outside Schengen: risky — consult SIRI first. Always carry your processuelt ophold letter.
Does my new permit start when the old one expires or when it’s approved?
New permits typically start from the approval date and run for the standard period (usually 4 years for work permits).
Can I renew from outside Denmark?
Generally no. You must be physically in Denmark to apply for a renewal. If you’ve left Denmark, it’s treated as a new application — including potential visa requirements to re-enter.
My permit card is physically damaged — can I still use it?
If the card is unreadable or the chip doesn’t work, request a replacement through SIRI. You may need it for biometric checks at borders.
