Understanding MitID & NemID in Denmark
Everything you need to know as an international about Denmark’s digital ID systems—MitID and NemID. Learn how to get set up, what you need for banking, public services, jobs, daily life, and your move from NemID to MitID in 2025.
What is MitID? What Was NemID?
- MitID is Denmark’s official digital identification system, used for secure login to everything: public services (Borger.dk), tax (SKAT), online banking, job applications, doctor’s appointments, and much more.
- NemID was the old digital ID (phased out in 2023–24). Most internationals and citizens must now use MitID. MitID official site.
Tip: You cannot open a Danish bank account or access public digital self-service without MitID!
