Copenhagen
The capital anchors the region on Zealand’s east coast – harbour swims, Tivoli, Nyhavn, world-renowned food and design. It is also the transport hub from which every day trip below departs.
North Zealand and the castles
Just north of the city lies castle country and the coastal “Danish Riviera.” Two are unmissable: Frederiksborg in Hillerod, the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia, and Kronborg in Helsingor, the UNESCO fortress of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, looking across the narrow sound to Sweden.
Roskilde and Koge
West and south of Copenhagen sit two historic towns. Roskilde has a UNESCO cathedral with the royal tombs and a superb Viking Ship Museum; Koge is a charming medieval merchant town of half-timbered houses around a big market square.
The island of Mon
To the south-east, the small island of Mon – reached by road from Zealand – is famous for Mons Klint, brilliant white chalk cliffs plunging into turquoise sea, plus dark-sky stargazing and pretty countryside. It makes a wonderful nature day or overnight.
Getting around Zealand
Copenhagen’s S-train and the regional rail network reach most of the region quickly and cheaply – Hillerod, Helsingor, Roskilde and Koge are all easy train rides, so you rarely need a car. For Mon and some coastal spots a car helps. The Oresund train even slips across the bridge to Sweden in about 35 minutes.
