Danish Citizenship — Naturalisation Requirements & Process 2026

Danish Citizenship — How to Become a Danish Citizen

Becoming a Danish citizen gives you the right to vote, a Danish passport, and permanent security in Denmark. The process is called naturalisation and involves meeting strict requirements on residency, language, self-sufficiency, and knowledge of Danish society.

Residence Permanent 9 years Apply KINGDOM OF DENMARK PASSPORT ● Language test · Citizenship test · Self-sufficiency · No criminal record Dual citizenship allowed since 2015

Overview

Danish citizenship is granted through an act of parliament (indfødsretslov). Twice a year, the government presents a bill listing approved applicants. You apply through the Ministry of Immigration and Integration, not SIRI. The process is lengthy — typically 1–2 years from application to ceremony.

Requirements

  • Continuous residence: At least 9 years of legal residence in Denmark (reduced to 8 for refugees, 6 for Nordic citizens, and varies for spouses of Danish citizens)
  • Permanent residency: You must hold permanent residency at the time of application
  • No criminal convictions: Serious convictions can permanently disqualify or add waiting periods
  • No overdue public debt
  • Self-sufficiency: Not received certain public benefits in the last 2 years
  • Danish language: Passed Prøve i Dansk 3 or equivalent (higher than permanent residency requirement)
  • Citizenship test: Passed the indfødsretsprøven (citizenship knowledge test)
  • Sign a declaration of loyalty and respect for Danish values

Language requirements

You must have passed Prøve i Dansk 3 (PD3) — a B2-level Danish language exam. This is higher than the PD2 required for permanent residency. The test covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Free Danish language courses are available through your municipality.

Citizenship knowledge test

The indfødsretsprøven tests your knowledge of Danish society, culture, history, and politics. It consists of 40 multiple-choice questions — you need at least 32 correct answers (80%). Study materials are published by the Ministry. The test is held several times per year.

How to apply

Meet all requirements

Ensure you have permanent residency, have passed PD3 and the citizenship test, and meet all other conditions.

Submit your application

Apply through the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. Include all required documentation: language test results, citizenship test results, criminal record check, residence history.

Wait for the parliamentary bill

If approved, your name is included in a naturalization bill presented to parliament twice per year (typically spring and autumn). Parliament votes on the bill.

Attend the citizenship ceremony

After the bill passes, you attend a ceremony in your municipality where you receive your citizenship certificate and shake hands with the mayor (or designated official).

Dual citizenship

Denmark has allowed dual citizenship since September 2015. You do not need to give up your original nationality to become Danish. Similarly, Danish citizens who acquire another nationality no longer lose their Danish citizenship.

The citizenship ceremony

The ceremony is mandatory. You must attend in person in your municipality. It involves signing a declaration of loyalty, a handshake with the presiding official, and receiving your citizenship certificate. The ceremony is usually a positive, celebratory event with other new citizens.

Common problems

I haven’t passed Prøve i Dansk 3

This is a hard requirement — no exceptions. PD3 is significantly more demanding than PD2. Consider intensive Danish courses or private tutoring well before your application.

The process is taking very long

1–2 years from application to ceremony is normal due to the parliamentary schedule. There’s no way to expedite it.

Questions and answers

Can I vote before getting citizenship?

You can vote in municipal and regional elections after 4 years of residence. National elections and EU parliament elections require Danish citizenship.

Can my children get citizenship automatically?

Children born in Denmark to non-Danish parents don’t automatically get citizenship. However, children included on your application may be naturalised alongside you. Children born after you become a citizen are Danish by birth.

What does the Danish passport give me?

Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 190+ countries, right to live and work anywhere in the EU, consular protection from Danish embassies worldwide, and the right to vote in all Danish elections.
