Feriepenge (Holiday Pay) Estimator
Under the Danish Holiday Act (Ferieloven), you earn 2.08 paid vacation days for every month you work, amounting to 12.5% of your gross salary. Use the calculator below to see exactly what you’ve accrued.
Calculate Your Accrued Feriepenge
*Estimates are gross amounts. Feriepenge is taxed upon payout. If you have “Ferie med løn” (paid holiday) in your contract, you take your normal salary during time off instead of claiming this cash pool.
How the Danish Holiday System Works
You earn it, you request it, and then you take your time off. The system operates on a strict timeline.
Understand your contract type
Before you try to log in and claim cash, you need to know which of the two holiday pay systems your employer uses.
- Common for salaried, full-time office workers (Funktionærloven).
- When you take a day off, you just receive your normal monthly salary.
- You do not request money from Feriekonto. Instead, you get a small ~1% holiday bonus (ferietillæg) paid out in May and August.
- Common for hourly workers, part-time, or student jobs.
- When you take a day off, your employer does *not* pay you.
- Instead, your employer sends 12.5% of your wages to a fund (Feriekonto). You must actively request this money when you take time off.
Learn the Holiday Cycle (Ferieåret)
Denmark uses “concurrent holiday” (samtidighedsferie), meaning you can take vacation days in the same year you earn them.
- You earn days from September 1st to August 31st.
- You accrue exactly 2.08 days per month (yielding 25 total days over 12 months).
- You have 16 months to actually use the days: from September 1st to December 31st of the following year.
- Unused days beyond the statutory minimum might be lost or paid out depending on agreements.
Requesting your money via Feriekonto
If you are a Type B worker (or if you quit a Type A job, turning your remaining days into cash), you must actively order your payout.
- Log into Borger.dk using your MitID.
- Search for “Request holiday pay” (Bestil feriepenge).
- Enter the specific dates you are taking vacation.
- The system processes the request, taxes the gross amount, and sends the net amount to your NemKonto.
FAQ
What happens when you leave the country or don’t take time off.
Can I just get the Feriepenge paid out without taking vacation?
Usually, no. The Danish law is designed to force you to actually take a break from work. You must declare that you are taking time off. There are strict exceptions, such as if you have a tiny amount of funds left over at the end of the holiday year, or if you are leaving the Danish labor market entirely.
What happens to my Feriepenge if I quit my job?
If you have “Paid Holiday” (Ferie med løn), your employer will convert all your unused, earned vacation days into cash (calculated at 12.5% of your qualifying salary) and send it to Feriekonto. You can then request this money when you take a holiday at your *next* job.
What if I am moving away from Denmark forever?
If you are deregistering your CPR and leaving the country permanently, you can request to have ALL your accrued Feriepenge paid out as a lump sum without having to take an actual vacation. Do this via Borger.dk *before* you close your Danish NemKonto.
