About Exploring Denmark
Who is behind Exploring Denmark, why we built it, and how we research, write and maintain accurate, trustworthy guides on Danish tax, immigration and daily life.
Written and maintained by James O'Hare, a Scot living near Copenhagen.
Why this site exists
Moving to Denmark means navigating CPR numbers, MitID, tax cards, deposit rules and a hundred small systems that locals absorb over a lifetime and newcomers must learn in a fortnight. Exploring Denmark exists to make that path clearer: practical, accurate, no-nonsense guides and free tools for internationals building a life here. We write the guide we wish we had when we arrived.
What we cover
Eight areas: moving and immigration, tax and money, housing, working, healthcare and family, studying, daily life, and Danish culture and belonging. Alongside the guides, a set of free calculators help you work out the numbers that actually matter, take-home pay, rent, deposits, SU, car tax and more. How we research
We build our content from primary, official sources wherever possible: Danish government sites such as borger.dk, skat.dk, nyidanmark.dk (SIRI), Motorstyrelsen, su.dk, Familieretshuset and the relevant ministries and agencies. Where we give a figure, we state the year it applies to, so you always know how current it is.
Accuracy and review
Danish rules change, so we date each guide and review our content regularly, especially around January when many thresholds reset. When we learn something has changed, we update it. We are human and Denmark is complicated, so if you spot an error, please tell us via the contact page, we genuinely want to know, and we correct mistakes openly and promptly.
Independent and reader-first
Exploring Denmark is independent, and our editorial decisions are made independently of any commercial arrangement. Our recommendations are never for sale. Where the site earns anything, for example through affiliate links, we disclose it openly and it never changes what we recommend or how we rank things.
What we are not
We are a guide, not an authority. We do not give personalised legal, tax, immigration or financial advice, and we always encourage you to confirm important decisions with the relevant Danish authority or a qualified professional. Think of us as the well-informed friend who points you in the right direction, not the official who signs the form.
Corrections and updates
We correct mistakes openly and promptly. Significant changes and timely rule updates are noted on our updates page, so you can see what has changed and when.
