Housing Benefit (Boligstøtte) Eligibility Checker
Denmark offers monthly cash assistance to renters, but the formula is complex and heavily income-dependent. Use this quick filter to see if you might qualify before spending hours navigating the Borger.dk application.
Am I eligible for Boligstøtte?
*This tool checks the primary dealbreakers (income, kitchen, kids). Exact amounts require the official SKAT calculation of square meters and pure rent.
The 3 Golden Rules of Boligstøtte
Before you apply, make sure your housing contract meets these legal requirements.
The Kitchen Rule
The government only subsidizes full independent residences, not simple bedrooms.
- Your rental must have its own private kitchen with running water and a stove.
- If you rent a single room and share a kitchen with your landlord or roommates, you generally cannot get Boligstøtte.
- Exception: Certain recognized student dormitories (kollegier) allow you to apply even with a shared kitchen, but the amount is often reduced.
The Income & Wealth Limit
Boligstøtte is designed to help lower-income residents and students, not high-earning expats.
- Udbetaling Danmark calculates the benefit based on the combined gross income of everyone registered at the address.
- If you are a single professional earning an average full-time salary (e.g., above 35,000 DKK/month), your benefit will likely be reduced to 0 DKK.
- There is also an asset limit (formuegrænse). If you have significant savings or stocks (typically above ~970,000 DKK), your benefit is heavily reduced.
The Address Requirement (CPR)
You cannot apply for a future apartment.
- You must be officially registered at the address in the CPR system to receive the money.
- You can apply up to a month before moving in, but the payout won’t trigger until you actually live there.
- The money is deposited monthly directly into the NemKonto of the person who applied.
FAQ
Answering the most critical expat questions about roommates and visas.
Will receiving Boligstøtte get my visa revoked?
For most work and study permits (like the Pay Limit Scheme or Positive List), receiving standard Boligstøtte (housing benefit) is safe. It is not considered “active social policy” (like Kontanthjælp or unemployment benefits) which normally triggers a visa revocation. However, if you are on a Family Reunification visa where your spouse had to post a financial guarantee, taking certain benefits can be risky. Always check the specific conditions of your permit with SIRI.
What if I share the apartment with roommates?
Only one person per address can apply for Boligstøtte. Udbetaling Danmark will look at the combined income of everyone registered at the CPR address, even if they aren’t on the lease! If your roommates earn good salaries, it will push the total household income over the limit, and you will get nothing.
Are utilities included in the rent calculation?
No. The subsidy is calculated purely on the “pure rent” (ren husleje). You must deduct your advance payments for water, heating (aconto varme), and electricity from the total amount when applying.
