Overview: What to Close Before You Leave

Bank Account(s) All Danish current and savings accounts, including NemKonto, must be closed or moved. Remember: salary, tax, and refunds are paid to NemKonto.
Utilities & Subscriptions Electricity, water, heating, internet, phone, TV, waste, gym, insurance, and streaming services. Cancel or transfer all contracts in advance.
Final Bills & Refunds Most companies send a final bill or refund. Make sure they have your forwarding address and a valid bank account for payments.

Closing Your Danish Bank Account

In Person or Online Most banks (Danske, Nordea, Jyske, Sydbank, etc.) let you close your account in a branch or via secure online banking message (Netbank/MitID). In person: bring ID and NemID/MitID.
From Abroad Already left Denmark? Most banks allow closure by secure message or email/letter with copy of ID. Call your bank’s international helpdesk for instructions.
What About NemKonto? Your main account for public payments (tax refunds, salary, SU, etc.). When you close it, set up a new NemKonto if you expect further payments—can be an EU account.

Closing Utilities, Internet & Subscriptions

2. Pay Final Bills Make sure all direct debits, standing orders, and invoices are paid in full. Keep receipts and screenshots.
3. Confirm Cancellations Get written confirmation from bank and all companies that your account/contract is closed and no further charges will apply.
4. Provide New Account/Address If you expect refunds, give a new IBAN or EU bank account and a forwarding address. Update e-Boks and NemKonto as needed.

What Happens After Closing?

Refunds & Deposits Utilities and landlord may send refunds after your departure. Make sure they have your new account and contact details.
NemKonto & Payments If you expect Danish tax refunds, SU, or payments, you need an active NemKonto (can be foreign IBAN if registered at nemkonto.dk).
Final Tax Return File your last tax return and report any changes to SKAT. If you overpaid, refunds come via NemKonto.
