The Danish tax system, in plain English
Think of it as four stages
Danish tax looks frightening until you see the order it's applied in. It's a stack, and each layer only touches income above its line:
- AM-bidrag (8%) comes off your gross income first, before anything else.
- Personal allowance - the first DKK 54,100 (2026) is tax-free.
- Bottom tax (12.01%) + municipal tax (~25%) on everything above the allowance.
- Middle, top and top-top brackets stack only on the highest slices - most people never get here.
The rates that matter
| Layer | 2026 rate | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| AM-bidrag | 8% | All gross income |
| Bottom tax | 12.01% | Income above the allowance |
| Municipal tax | ~25% avg | Varies by municipality (22-27%) |
| Middle tax | 7.5% | Above ~DKK 641,200 (after AM-bidrag) |
| Top tax | 7.5% | Above ~DKK 777,900 (after AM-bidrag) |
| Top-top tax | 5% | Above ~DKK 2,592,700 (after AM-bidrag) |
What most people actually pay
For a salaried worker below the middle-tax line, the combined rate lands around 35-38% plus AM-bidrag, depending on municipality - and deductions pull the effective rate lower. The scary "60%" marginal figure only bites on income in the very top bracket.
If you're a tax resident, the world is in scope
Full Danish tax residents declare worldwide income - foreign salary, rental income, capital gains, overseas accounts. Double-taxation treaties usually prevent you paying twice, but you still have to report it. Newcomers routinely trip on this.
Where to go next
See understanding your payslip to decode the deductions, AM-bidrag, A-skat and top tax for the mechanics, and the expat tax scheme if you're a higher earner - it can change this whole picture. Try the net salary calculator for your own numbers.
Members of the National Church also pay church tax (kirkeskat), though most internationals never do.
