Borger.dk and e-Boks, your digital front desk

The one-line versionBorger.dk is the self-service portal for public tasks; Digital Post (often read in e-Boks) is where official letters arrive. Both run on MitID, and both are effectively mandatory.

Borger.dk: the self-service hub

Borger.dk is the single gateway to public services - change your address, book a new doctor, view your records, handle municipal tasks. You log in with MitID, and it ties everything to your CPR number. Think of it as the counter you used to queue at, now online.

Digital Post and e-Boks

Digital Post is the official channel for letters from Danish authorities. Many people read it through the e-Boks app or the Digital Post app. This is compulsory for everyone aged 15 and over living in Denmark.

Deadlines run from delivery, not from when you open itA tax deadline, a permit decision or a fine is legally “delivered” the moment it lands in Digital Post. Not opening it is not an excuse. Turn on notifications and check regularly.

Set both up on day one

Once your CPR and MitID are active, you're enrolled in Digital Post automatically. Install the app, log in with MitID, and confirm you can see your inbox. Do the same for borger.dk so you're ready when you need to change an address or book a service.

Exemption

Formal exemption from Digital Post is possible but must be requested in person at Borgerservice, and is only granted in specific circumstances (for example, no access to a computer or certain disabilities). For nearly everyone, using it is simply part of living here.

Common questions

Is e-Boks the same as Digital Post?
Digital Post is the official system; e-Boks is one popular app for reading it. There's also an official Digital Post app.
What if I don't speak Danish?
Much of borger.dk has English pages, but official letters are usually in Danish. Translation tools help, but don't ignore a letter because it's in Danish.
Can I get post on paper instead?
Only with a granted exemption. Otherwise everything official is digital.
