How it's calculated
- Nordic citizens can live and work in Denmark freely. Register your address and get a CPR number.
- EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can stay up to 3 months freely, then need a registration certificate based on work, study or enough money.
- Everyone else needs a permit before starting work. For jobs, the main routes in 2026 are the Pay Limit scheme (DKK 552,000 a year), the Supplementary Pay Limit scheme (DKK 446,000) and the Positive Lists.
- Other routes include study, family and Start-up Denmark, each with its own conditions.

Questions
Are UK citizens treated as EU citizens?
No. Since Brexit, UK citizens moving to Denmark need a permit like other non-EU citizens, unless they were covered by the Withdrawal Agreement.
Can my partner work in Denmark?
Accompanying family members of most work permit holders can live and work in Denmark.
How long does a permit take?
Processing times vary by scheme. Fast-track cases with a certified employer are usually the quickest.
