Probation periods, the first three months

Updated July 2026Reviewed July 2026
The short versionA Danish probation period (prøvetid) lasts a maximum of 3 months and only exists if written into your contract. During it, notice is much shorter: the employer gives 14 days, you can often leave with 1 day.

How probation works

Probation (prøvetid) is contractual, not automatic. It must be stated in writing in your employment contract; if it is not, there is no probation and full notice rules apply from day one. The maximum length is 3 months.

Notice during probation

For salaried employees under Funktionærloven, the employer must give 14 days' notice during probation, and this notice must be completed before the 3 months end. You as the employee can usually resign with as little as 1 day's notice unless your contract says otherwise.

What it means for you

Probation gives both sides flexibility early on. It does not remove your other rights (pay, holiday accrual, sick pay). If you are on a work permit, remember that ending a job, even in probation, affects your permit, see losing your job on a work permit.
