EU Blue Card in Denmark

The EU Blue Card is a residence and work permit for highly qualified non-EU workers. Denmark participates in the scheme, which was updated under EU-wide reforms in 2024. It offers some advantages over national schemes like the Pay Limit – especially for mobility between EU countries.

What is the EU Blue Card?

The EU Blue Card is an EU-wide work permit for non-EU nationals with a higher education qualification and a job offer that meets a minimum salary threshold. It allows you to live and work in Denmark, and – after meeting conditions – move more easily to other EU countries than with a national permit.

The 2024 EU reform expanded eligibility and improved portability between member states. Denmark has implemented these updates.

Requirements

  • Higher education qualification: A degree from a university or equivalent institution (at least 3 years of study). The degree must be recognised or comparable to a Danish equivalent.
  • Job offer in Denmark: A binding employment contract or binding job offer with a Danish employer for at least 6 months.
  • Salary above the threshold: Your gross annual salary must meet the minimum (see below).
  • Not an EU/EEA citizen: The Blue Card is for non-EU nationals only. EU citizens have free movement rights and don’t need it.

Salary threshold

The EU Blue Card salary threshold is set as a multiple of the average gross annual salary in Denmark. For 2026, this is approximately 440,000-460,000 DKK/year (the exact figure is published annually). This is slightly higher than the Pay Limit Scheme threshold, making the Pay Limit the easier path for some applicants.

For shortage occupations (listed on the Positive List), a lower threshold may apply – approximately 80% of the standard threshold.

Processing time is typically 1-3 months. Once approved, you receive a Blue Card that serves as both your residence and work permit.

Benefits of the Blue Card

  • EU mobility: After 12 months in Denmark (under new rules, previously 18), you can move to another EU member state with a new Blue Card application under simplified conditions.
  • Family reunification: Your spouse and children can join you under favourable conditions.
  • Path to permanent residency: Blue Card holders can apply for EU long-term resident status, which improves mobility further.
  • Job change flexibility: After the first 12 months, you can change employers within Denmark without a new application (notify SIRI).

Blue Card vs. Pay Limit Scheme

  • Pay Limit: lower salary threshold (~400,000 DKK), no degree requirement, simpler application. Better if you just want to work in Denmark.
  • Blue Card: higher salary threshold, degree required, but better for EU mobility and long-term status across Europe.
  • Many applicants qualify for both – choose based on whether EU mobility matters to you.

Common problems

My degree isn’t recognised

You may need to have it assessed by the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science. This can take several weeks – start early.

The salary is slightly below the threshold

Consider the Pay Limit Scheme instead, which has a lower threshold and no degree requirement.

Questions and answers

Can I apply for Forskerskatteordningen with a Blue Card?

Yes, if you meet the tax scheme’s separate requirements (recruited from abroad, salary above its threshold, etc.). The Blue Card and Forskerskatteordningen are independent – one doesn’t guarantee the other.

How long is the Blue Card valid?

Typically the length of your employment contract plus 3 months, up to a maximum of 4 years. Renewable.

Can I be self-employed on a Blue Card?

No. The Blue Card requires employment with a specific employer. Self-employment is not permitted.
